It could also serve as a neat little segue to add The Last Word into the game. Edit: Also OP said something about embracing the darkness, the new supers we're getting could be dark versions of the normal supers? A drifter.
We saw it in D1 and I'm pretty sure you can see it on the loading screen when going into Gambit. Did I miss some more story reveal? “The Drifter” is apparently the host of the new “Gambit” Crucible mode.

Then again how is class determined with guardians is it at the moment of rez or is it shaped by our personal experience and personality? It's clear that the Taken have some sort of relationship with Gambit as a mode, serving as the blockers and final boss and with all the game mechanics of the mode having a Taken flavour to them.

Drifter?

The lore tab “Bright Side of a Bad Idea” straight up says “he’s been playing warlock, which he ain’t if that wasn’t clear”.

Toland had a voice actor in the Taken King this is a different person.

I like the edge he brings and the open dismissal of our ghost, Imo he's a Titan wanting to be a hunter.

level 2. I never heard about that, Hunter, according to the playing card descriptions.

If it turns out to be Shin Malphur, I’ll ban myself from all social media platforms for a week. Press J to jump to the feed.

Guardians are brought to life by their ghosts and their experiences shape them in to who they wanna be as they head to the Last City. I've been saying this for a while, glad somebody else has seen it too.

Just so you know, not everyone is a Guardian, Guardians are just a classification of Lightbearer/Risen dedicated to protecting the Last City, Drifter is even classified as a Rogue Lightbearer (meaning he doesn't side with the ideals of the Guardians).

But all Lightbearers have access to the same powers, though individuals naturally have an affinity for some and not for others. I have no idea if that could even be possible/compatible with lore and all but it would be a welcome addition :). And since he was never a Guardian in the traditional sense, he was never assigned a role.

He shows some abilities that we associate with Hunters, others with Warlocks. Then again doesn’t the armor for D1 that mentions the shadows say there was a Titan who admired hunters? And oh crap I forgot about the different voice actor. So, here’s a list of what I believe he could be: -Given the frontier vibe of the expansion, the Drifter could be a Shadow of Yor, a dark mirror to the frontiersmen that followed Jaren Ward. In the context of the video game, yeah, you pick your class, but in the lore, nothing suggests you are resurrected as a certain kind of class. I took that as saying that his original class was warlock, but he no longer labels himself that way because he no longer considers himself a guardian in the traditional sense. He chooses not to do that. He doesn't really fit neatly into any of the Guardan classes, but I think Warlock might be the closest.

Remember, Crota couldn't just "return" to our world back in Dark Below, there was that 'Wakening' ritual where we had to fight a big floaty crystal?

That may seem obvious, but with the line “The Cabal have been busy since I’ve been gone!” it means that he’s likely spent some time in the City or at least been with other humans at some point after the Collapse.

If it is, it's a Toland who feels more freedom to be less creepy.

This explains his absence, as Toland is (to my knowledge) currently trapped in the Ascendant Realm. The Drifter. His body's dead and gone, he'd have to make a new one.

Even if Toland were to "escape" the Ascendant Realm, he wouldn't be able to just waltz back into our world.

is the drifter a warlock

The taken part of it could be attributed to how the awoken were mastering artificial taken energy back in Ttk, that's why we got taken armour. I’ve not played in awhile, but liked the Forsaken trailer. Classes are a game mechanic for us, but in-universe, they are just labels for jobs people do. 1 year ago. He's not a class.

I don't think it could even be Toland at all. The difference between the hunter and the warlock is the way they learned to use the Light (martial arts) and the philosophies they carried while learning.
He was rezzed in the Dark Age; Guardians, and by extension, the "classes", weren't as established a concept back then. I did think about Brask, but I think he's really dead, it shaped up who Cayde was. Drifter is from a period of time before classes existed and being a survivor is one of his most defining character traits, he'll use the light and the dark, act like a titan, warlock or hunter when the situation demands … I'm not sure about him being Toland- he doesn't seem the type to do something like this. And who has a different voice actor, apparently. Though I am biased. One of the most appealing things about Destiny's universe, for me, is the extent of gameplay/lore integration. Also both have very different attitudes and just...feel different. Plus he draws some power from The Darkness....which is why he's afraid that Shin Malphur will eventually come looking to put him down. But since he was born well before the city age, it’s not entirely black and white like that. The Drifter is too much like a Hunter for it to be him then. He was reawakened by the Traveler in a mysterious time of great suffering known as the Dark Age, long before Guardians like the player were revived. The drifter also looks like he'd be fun at parties, to clearly NOT Toland. Meaning a nameless stranger just passing through with his own business. I'm a little disappointed that the Gambit isn't hosted by Variks, with all the Fallen taking a prominent role in Forsaken.

It could also serve as a neat little segue to add The Last Word into the game. Edit: Also OP said something about embracing the darkness, the new supers we're getting could be dark versions of the normal supers? A drifter.
